They're trying to turn my computer into a phone.

http://www.howtogeek.com/74089/windows-8-the-gigantic-how-to-geek-screenshot-tour/

… Or at least, that was my first reaction. Then I realized that the whole thing looks (and functions) EXACTLY like Altimit, the OS from the .hack video games. So now I'll go with, "it only took Microsoft 9 years to rip off an anime-turned-video game."

Good game, Microsoft. Good game.

If Metro actually functions well, is more keyboard/mouse-friendly than is apparent in the demo, and doesn't slow everything way down, then color me impressed.

I still won't use it, but impressed nonetheless! I also couldn't give two shits about facebook and twitter being seamlessly integrated into an OS though. I mean, really? (Windows Messenger, anyone?)

Yeah, but nobody uses windows messenger and everybody uses Facebook.

inb4 "but I don't!" Shut up, I wasn't talking about you. To you, not about you :p. According to Wikipedia, Facebook had 845 million registered users in December, which is around 12% of the world population. If that doesn't count as pretty much everybody that has a computer and internet access, I don't know what does.

Besides, Microsoft isn't targeting you with Windows. It's targeting everybody else. You don't care about Facebook integration with your OS and Microsoft doesn't care about you.

In Soviet Russia, customer serve business! Wait, no, that's Corporate America. Mah bad.

As long as whatever OS I stumble upon at the time of my next computer hardware modernization runs my games, I'll probably not care about very much else.

I'm trolling now. Just gonna throw that out there, in case there was confusion. (~ ^.^ )~

40% of the US adult population uses smartphones. I don't, but I don't bash social media integration on them: Phones are P2P communication devices at their core; PCs are, inherently, not. Even if everyone uses Facebook, it does not logically follow that every PC is used for that purpose. Also: I do not despise the existence of something just because I do not use it, including but not limited to social media tools. Please stop jumping to conclusions.

Back into it: My point was that I think integrating FB and Twit (or any 3rd party internet-only apps, really) into the OS is a bad idea. I don't see how this is not going to eat up more RAM or CPU cycles even when those services aren't in active use. Though I also don't see how not to avoid quintuple negatives in every sentence I refuse to make, because English syntax fails to not correct itself. Onions.

Microsoft drops support for older versions of Windows once they release a new one; you know it, I know it, everybody knows it. That's the only way the system it works. But social media integration on corporate systems? Yeah, that's a GREAT idea. [inb4 "just turn it off"; yes, duh, but the system resources are still used (see: disabling Internet Explorer), the service is still sitting there in memory, and the system is *shocked* probably still online.]

Also: System stability and security, really not a problem? Okay, then; but I won't believe it 'til I see it. And when FB takes a dive within 2 years of release…? "Marketing fail" but really more than that.

I do think MS is catering to a specific audience with this, but that audience is not "people who love Facebook", it's "people who wish their PC was more like their smartphone." Agreed, I am not part of that audience; I thought that was obvious from my original post. It's all about usability. I get that. I just think this is a step in the wrong direction.

[Trolling, trolling, trolling~ I love to do the trolling~]
