I'm not in the know as to exactly what's going on… but my immediate reaction is two-fold: 1) That sucks, because science is awesome 2) That makes sense; we have enough problems to deal with here on earth

I'm against cutting spending for scientific research but it does make sense; we owe a fuck-ton of money and we should be trying to pay that off. Unfortunately, they aren't paying it off, either so I'm more upset they're cutting spending AND still spending it.
man, cutting funding sucks… if only they could get more people living in the US to pay taxes…say…oh i dunno…the kids paying inflated tuition's and then not allowed to legally work?
I guess that's what it comes down to in my mind: Is it cool? Sure. Is it potentially useful? Maybe, but not immediately. Should it be funded by federal taxes? No.
I have the same reaction to the Tevatron being shut down. Is smashing atoms together cool? Definitely! Is it potentially useful? Maybe? Should it be funded by federal taxes? Probably not.

heh, i actually agree with kiri…someone check the temp in hell.
At the end of the day, the ROI on these things are impossible to know, its just one of those "I guess it look like a good idea" things for the country to invest in.
Plus, commercial space travel becomes more viable every day. Cutting funding to NASA will end up slowing that down some because a lot of the research being done is actually paid by grants from the govt., but we'll get there eventually and I'm glad that the future of space travel in the US is no longer married to govt. funding.
