Oh yeah, in case it wasn't posted here already (I've honestly forgotten everything I've done this morning, so I can't remember how I ended up at these choice locations online…)… I give you: pleaserobme.com. The actual feed is disabled now, but basically it was a dressed-up Twitter feed/search of public Twitter and foursquare messages that mark people as away from their home.

I love technology!

Edit: Ahha, it was also linked in a response to the article Aiya posted earlier. Cool beans.

I definitely am paranoid. My own curriculum and experience with government employment made me paranoid. I'm am not trying to scare everyone away from facebook, which is only one example of what i'm bringing up), but simply to consider and be mindful of what you are posting on the net. That simple state of mind alone is enough to get people using those tools more safely. Cair and kiri have great examples of complete lack of control over your digital footprint and backs up my initial closing statement: "We are not mature enough to fully embrace those technologies".

What scares me the most is the amount of some typical responses i encounter from people:
"It will never happen."
"Its impossible."
"They would never do that !"
"They cant do that ! They dont have the right !" (after agreeing to the whole ToS lol)
"Bah is just a computer. What could possibly happen ?"

Those are the ones the most at risk. That being said…. come on Kiri, you are among friends here. Go ahead and post those socially akward pics ! :P

*edit: interesting developments for social networking. Somewhat related to this thread subject.

I find pretty much all of this to be common sense really, but then.. I suppose common sense is lacking in most people. I also don't really approve of paranoia either in spite of saying that - I do however approve of cautious behavior online and everywhere else it can be applied.

I guess in other words.. I'm not scared of Facebook or other social networking sites. I am smart enough however to know what I place there can be seen by others, and that my contacts there are capable of posting things concerning me to others as well.. and hence, I am cautious enough not to place anything so risque in such a public place. (And likewise, my contacts know better as well.. I don't befriend 280 people like many do on Facebook, that's completely retarded behavior in my opinion and as such I keep only my closest group of friends whom I know well and trust within my network.)

Aside that may or may not derail the thread:
If I said that "our generation" is the most "tech-savvy," in that we generally embrace new tech but actually understand what we're getting ourselves into, would I be completely wrong? It seems to me that people much older (WITH EXCEPTIONS - I TRUST YOU, SAL!) or much younger (post-Clems) don't understand either how to use this stuff or the possible consequences.

Freaking old people, with their inane stories and holier-than-thou attitudes!

Freaking kids, with their texting and rap music!

Freaking in-betweens, with their knowing-how-to-use-everything-for-evil-and-lols!

I'm asian and i love bologna sandwiches. But I thought that communists were generally Chinese or Russian? The real question is, what does this make me?
