I'm posting this info here as it can be of great use if you are still attempting to grab the beta client and for the release on sept 22nd. Copy pasted my post on ThirdWind forum.

The current updater is quite a pain in the ass. Always jams around 95% for 1-2 hours. Not only that but on large files, youre gonna be seeding your bandwidth cap away. Since it uses torrent protocol, why not use our own tools then:

First off, open the game and let the updater get to the part where its starts the download. Identify the file its trying to download just above the progress bar on the left. Patch files looks like this: D2010.09.06.2000.patch

Locate the .torrent file created for the specific file the updater was trying to download. Look at the path in the explorer window in the SS. The random folder name under \ffxiv-beta is most likely gonna be different for you. Just browse through them.

Open the torrent file with your favorite torrent client. I recommend utorrent. Have your torrent client download the file on the appropriate location which whould be the root of the random named folder under the \ffxiv-beta folder. Your torrent client will then place all the files in their appropriate location according to the folder tree described on the torrent file.

* on that ss, i didnt select the root of the download dir. as the download location so i had to move the file manually after.

Now thats what i'm talking about!

Finaly, double check all the files are in place and start the game. The updater will check the file then proceed.

Lol, SE can't even implement a torrent client and integrate it into game updates. Way to fail at something Blizzard did years ago.

You are being hasrh for the wrong reasons. You are comparing an incomplete software component , not yet officially released (still in its beta phase) and tested for the first time 24h/24 with the biggest live trafic load it has seen, to something that has been tested, fixed and refined over many years. Blizzard's updater was a mess too when it was first released.

No, the reason I'm being harsh is that SE has had years on a live MMO to figure out the update problem and hasn't bothered to use that time wisely.

I don't have too much trouble with the updater tbh. i've had it crash once, but it didn't lose any of the downloaded files. other than that, 20 mins on most of the smaller updates and a few hours on the full install download…

The smaller updates are 5~9mb, so 20 mins for that is horrible. You can get them in about
30 seconds using uTorrent as described above.

What worlds and char names are people using? Know this is a bit late considering game launches in 8 days, but I just recently reopened it to see how much it'd changed since last I played.

I was not much impressed to be bluntly honest. The game still has a nasty habit of dropping new players off with nary a hint of where to go. The storyline quests give you a map…but it's not the same map you look at with the "m" key or map option from the menu. If you don't know to go to the journal and select the map from the quest there…you can quite easily get very very lost (esp in Gridania, it's like Windurst crossbred with the Labyrinth.) Difficulty seems ramped up a little, or at least my Thaumaturge got his arse handed to him on the rank 1 guildlevee which was mildly embarassing. Combat still doesn't take advantage of the stamina gauge in my opinion, there's no queuing of abilities that the system would make so useful. Not sure how it is for the other cities, but in Gridania at least, the storyline quest kinda leaves you hanging after the first section, requiring you to hit 10 is a bit steep considering how much they build up the fact you shouldn't go into the forest til you get cleansed.

My 2 cents.

Oh, and I'm Xionis Zeshun on Rabanastre, in Gridania.

Edit: Fuck poison.

Meh, I've no funds to purchase or play the game once it launches, so joining a linkshell for 8 days seems a tad silly. I was just gonna pop onto one of you guys' servers and pester you or something =P

Edit: Also, I sincerely hope they fixed guildleve's in the release, I just failed one after a d/c again and that issue was brought up months ago.
